Step One: Scrape the Modge Podge Off

The first step to getting Modge Podge off your carpets is to get rid of as much of the excess as you can. If the stain is wet, simply use a rag or a paper towel to soak up the material. 

For carpets that have dried Modge Podge stains, use a paint scraper or a butter knife to scrape the worst of the Modge Podge off your floors. You’ll need to use a bit of elbow grease here. 

Step Two: Apply Petroleum Jelly

Although it might seem odd, petroleum jelly works wonders when it comes to getting Modge Podge out of your carpet. Scoop a fingerful of petroleum jelly out of the container and apply it to the Modge Podge stain.

Using your finger, work the petroleum jelly into the carpet. Then, let it sit for about an hour. You may need to let it sit for longer than an hour depending on how tough the stain is.

Step Three: Dampen the Carpet 

Next, wipe as much of the jelly off the carpet as you can. At this stage, you’ll need to grab a bucket of warm water and mix it with a bit of grease-cutting dish liquid. 

Then, soak a rag in the mixture and begin using it to dampen the carpet. Work the liquid into the carpet by rubbing it gently with the cloth. 

Once you’ve fully dampened the carpet, allow it to rest for fifteen minutes. When the time is up, flush the carpet with cold water. If there’s still petroleum jelly or Modge Podge on the carpet repeat the dish liquid process. 

Step Four: Steam Clean

Next, you need to deep clean the carpet. This is especially important for cleaning up sticky substances as it ensures the deep fibers of the carpet are clean. The easiest way to do this is by steam cleaning the carpet. 

Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your steam cleaner. Go over every part of the carpet and gradually work your way out of the room. 

Step Five: Air Dry

Finally, you’ll need to let the carpet air dry. To do this, open all the doors and windows in the room to let the breeze come through. 

It’s also a good idea to place a few upright fans in the doorways to help speed up the drying process. If you have a ceiling fan in the room turn that on as well.
